Higher Education Leadership & Professional Practice

Daryl graduated from the first high school of fine and performing art established in the United States, Arts High. He has an MFA in Advertising Design from Syracuse University and a BFA in Communication Design with a minor in Art Education from Pratt Institute.

 

An elected Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts and Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), London, England — he is the former three-term elected Chair of the Department of Art and Design at Montclair State University and Founding Dean of the College of the Arts at California State University, Stanislaus and Dean of the College of the Arts and Communication at William Paterson University respectively. 

 

Daryl’s 20 + years of combined experience working in higher education and professional practice encompasses Published Book Illustration, Creative Direction in Advertising Design, and Senior Art Direction and Design, specializing in Marketing, Identity, and Branding New Product Launch & Development. He is the author of “Design and the Creative Process,” published by Thomson Delmar (now Cengage). He was appointed Dean of the College of the Arts and Communication at William Paterson University in 2013. During that time, he facilitated the development of progressive arts programs across disciplines. He hired a talented and dedicated faculty and staff comprised of emerging and established artists, scholars, Grammy Award winners & nominees, Guggenheim Fellows, and Fulbright Scholars — rebranding the College as a community of "Makers, Thinkers, Performers, and Doers.

 

Informed by an urban and global perspective, gleaned through profound experiences in professional practice, pedagogy, and the transparency of holistic leadership, he embraces inclusion and diversity, belonging and empathy, and importantly, the ideals of shared governance and shared goals. Daryl believes in the transformative power of the arts and civic engagement. He remains focused on advancing higher education, across the disciplinary spectrum of the visual and performing arts, in the preparation of global citizens as agents of change and discovery — vital to the life and sustainability of our society.
